It isn’t new news that London Borough of Hillingdon are moving Uxbridge Library into the Civic Centre – but dates have now been announced.
The last day for the “old” library on the High Street will be Monday 31 March – it closes at the end of the day, and then library staff will be busy for almost a fortnight while they relocate to the “new” library inside the Civic Centre.
The new library will have an official opening on Thursday 24 April, but the plans are for its doors to open to the public for the first time on Friday 11 April.
Ahead of the relocation, there will be some disruption to services at the High Street site in the week before it closes, however library users will still be able to access services at Hillingdon’s 15 other libraries and the mobile library. The closest alternative libraries are Ickenham, Yiewsley and Oak Farm and of course we have libraries in both Ruislip and Ruislip Manor.
It has yet to be announced what will be happening in the space of the old Uxbridge Library, but at the January full Council meeting, Cllr Bianco answered a question from Cllr Richard Mills to say:
“We have been actively seeking a new owner for the old Uxbridge Library. A sale is being negotiated with heads of terms now agreed and a formal announcement will be made very soon.”
As we have seen with building plans, LB Hillingdon, and the word “soon“, this could be… any time. This correspondent recommends not holding your breath.
Meanwhile, Hillingdon have some hints at what is awaiting library users at the “new” library in the Civic Centre on their website, and in the current issue of “Hillingdon People”
