The recent re-routing of several buses in Ruislip due to congestion at Ruislip Bus Station has been causing problems for our residents, and especially the many visitors who come on hot days for Ruislip Lido. TfL have still not explained exactly what the problems are that caused it to suddenly remove Ruislip Station from the H13 and U10 routes. We and our councillors have asked but are still awaiting a reply. From what we can work out for ourselves there are just too many buses starting and ending at Ruislip Station, with only three bus stands available for buses to wait before starting their next journey.
The map below shows the current layout of Ruislip Bus Station and Ruislip Station Car Park. There is an area next to the entrance of the car park which used to house a taxi office, but that has been closed for several years. Also in the car park is a large “yard” at the far end, used by TfL for storage of various items, mainly skips. The existing three bus stands are outside Corinthian House, with the two bus stops on the opposite side of the road. Up until the changes some buses would park up near the entrance to the car park, but this was an unofficial solution.
What we propose to fix the problem is to use the space of the old taxi office to provide four extra bus stands, and a new entrance road into the car park. When buses want to leave the stand they would drive along the north road of the car park to the far. end where the space is wide enough to provide a proper bus turning circle, being some 25m from north to south. The car park is tapered so the part of the car. park nearest the stands is probably too narrow for the buses to turn comfortably. The turning circle would be created using part of TfL’s yard rather than car parking spaces, hopefully maintaining the car parking spaces currently available. The wider entrance and exit routes for the car park are designed to be bus-friendly and would require some demolition and moving of assets, re-surfacing where the old fence was and painting new road lines. None of this is particularly difficult or expensive.
The map below show the proposed system with the new bus stands and the turning circle.
Hopefully we can persuade TfL to implement this proposal, or something similar in the very near future, as with the summer holidays coming up the Lido route is only going to get busier.*
