As a reminder, this evening (Monday 25th November), Lidl are exhibiting their proposals for a new supermarket on the site of The Orchard hotel and restaurant. Please attend their exhibition to learn more: it is at the Ruislip Conservative Club on Ickenham Road from 17:00 to 20:00.
We are concerned about the plans in their current form because:
- the locally listed Spitfire Memorial has been removed from the site (and the original memorial does not feature in Lidl’s initial proposals – instead, in their leaflet it has been “replaced” with a different model Spitfire on a patch of grass)
- the Orchard hotel has a long local history and there is a pending application for the building itself to be locally listed
- the whole site is within the Ruislip Village Conservation Area and we’re unsure that a modern supermarket built within the conservation area would be able to uphold its aims.
Lidl are seeking the views of local residents, both via their online form and via email to lidlruislip@whatyouthink.co.uk.
We understand that Lidl have not purchased The Orchard, and they have not yet submitted any plans. They have said that their intention is to collect local views before possibly submitting an application next month. They have requested residents to get in touch with them before 2nd December.
What can you do?
- You can tell Lidl how important the memorial is by email on lidlruislip@whatyouthink.co.uk or via their online questionnaire
- You can register for the RRA newsletter (below) to receive further updates as we have them, and keep an eye on our website.
- You can contact your councillors to let them know that you believe the memorial is significant so that they know to press Lidl and others on its importance.
