The Mayor Officially Opens Whiteheath Infant School’s Reading Shed

On Tuesday, November 4th, the Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr Philip Corthorne, paid a visit to the school to open their new Reading Shed. The inspiration for this idea stems from the fact that the school encourages their pupils to enjoy reading from an early age but, as the library is closed at breaks and lunchtimes, there is no opportunity for reading at play time. To enable this to become a possibility and with money raised by the active Parents’ Association a shed full of exciting books was built in the playground.

Mr Thomas Taylor, the Premises Officer, spent the past summer holidays building this “outdoor library”. At the beginning of the new school year in September Mrs Hall, Headteacher, and one of the pupils filled it with beautiful books which are already very popular with the children. Following the official opening children could be seen sat around tables reading books.

Finally it was the most important time of the morning. All the children’s eyes were fixed on the Shed when the Mayor cut the red ribbon and the doors were opened. Everyone cheered and clapped with excitement. The pupils who were school councillors were invited to the Shed to meet the Mayor who very kindly told them he was going to arrange for them to visit the Mayor’s Parlour at the Civic Centre.

The morning event was a delightful experience and hopefully all the pupils will enjoy reading for the rest of their lives due to the encouragement provided by the school staff and the innovation of this Reading Shed.
