McDonald’s restaurant has been on Ruislip High Street for 30 years, employs 80 local people and regularly serves many more. This year they plan to extend their restaurant into the unit next door (previously The Linen Chest) and return it to work as a more “traditional” fastfood takeaway and restaurant configuration.
They plan on having 120-150 seats inside, achieved partially through the expansion into the extra space, and partially by moving the delivery drivers out of the restaurant itself, and to a new purpose-designed collection point to the rear of the shop – away from the high street.
If approved, there will be a dedicated entrance that would be just for couriers (the motorcycle and bike delivery drivers working with Just Eat, Uber Eats, Deliveroo etc), to streamline operations and minimize disruptions for their in-restaurant guests.
There will be a series of planning applications, the first of which has gone online with London Borough of Hillingdon this week. It gives a glimpse of the plans, as we illustrate below with a current photo from Google Streetview (showing The Linen Chest and McDonald’s) and the proposed new design and signage from the planning application (showing the extended McDonald’s):
Around the back of the McDonald’s resturant would be the new collection point that would be used by Just Eat, Uber Eats, Deliveroo etc drivers/riders who collect orders for delivery. This will take them away from the front and the inside of the restaurant.
The plans currently visible on the LBH Planning website show the rear entrance – see our annoted extract below:
We understand that the McDonald’s branch in South Ruislip (underneath Asda and Cineworld) successfully uses a similar system of separation between restaurant users and delivery drivers, and it is with their experience that they are designing and brining the same idea and improvements to Ruislip High Street.
We will follow the plans with interest, and are supportive of the intention behind them – of alleviating the congestion and density of motorcycle rider-couriers on Ruislip High Street.
The redevelopment would be a substantial job and investment – it would see McDonald’s on Ruislip High Stret closing for about eight weeks (during which time, employees will be temporarily relocated) for the construction work.
