Another Award For Lady Bankes Primary School

On Saturday, November 30th Lady Bankes Primary School was presented with the Hinman Shield at Eastcote House Gardens’ Tree Dressing, The Shield is so named in honour of the couple George and Margaret Hinman who saved Eastcote House Gardens and Long Meadow from development in the 1930s. The Award has been running from 1980 and is given every year to a school, uniformed group or any other young persons’ group for their contribution to the community.

The Award has to be applied for in writing, citing reasons why a particular group should be seriously considered to receive the Shield. The school’s submission, written by Miss Beth Mackerness, Year 6 teacher, contained reports of the school’s numerous relevant events including fundraising opportunities throughout the year that were recognised in their Ofsted report which stated: “Pupils have a clear understanding of their contribution to society by taking part in community events.”

Some of the school’s events have previously been reported via this website but others include the following: As part of their Harvest Festival celebrations the school asked its community to bring in donations for Hillingdon Foodbank. The school worked in partnership with Lawrence Rand Estate Agents and House Captains helped to load the generous donations into the van for delivery.

Year 6 pupils visited High Meadows Care Home to entertain residents by singing Christmas Carols.

They have raised money for Great Ormond Street Hospital, Comic Relief and Christmas Jumper Day for Save The Children. Ladybankes Primary also has a Safety Squad which is a group of pupils from Years 2-6 who are involved in various activities through the year to help their friends. They run competitions and as part of their role they look after playground wellbeing boxes and make sure that all children have someone to play with. They also had a session with the local police to make sure that cars were following the speed limit around the local roads. Every June Year 6 pupils hold an Enterprise Day. They work in groups and make, bake and create stalls to make money for their end of year party. This year they raised £2000!

Reading the above information, it is obvious why the school was chosen for this prestigious award. As Miss Mackerness said in the opening of the application: “Whatever role a pupil takes on, working hard to benefit others and the community sits at the heart of what they do.”
