Ruislip Residents' Association

Ruislip Manor

Ruislip Manor has useful local shops and some specialty shops serving a wide area, including a mobility appliances retailer, two motor-cycle specialists and two bed specialists, on opposite corners of the main road junction.   Through this page we will keep members informed about proposals for developments in this area.

Ruislip Manor is definitely getting a face-lift!   Work will start early in 2012.   Hillingdon Council has secured an award  from Transport for London to pay for road widening of Victoria Road from Shenley Avenue to Cornwall Road - in addition to previous awards announced earlier this year.  Shop fronts are to be improved and a stop-and-shop parking scheme introduced.   All excellent news!   We shall monitor its implementation with great interest.

Hillingdon Borough Council has input two bids for the Mayor of London's "Outer London's Fund - Round Two", to provide support for the Ruislip Manor shopping area and the Northwood Hills shopping area.

Ruislip Manor Chamber of Commerce has invited the Mayor of London to come and see for himself what needs to be done to make a real difference in our area.  We cross our fingers that this exciting opportunity bears fruit.

Come and meet our representatives on the Christmas Fun Day on Saturday 12th November and tell us what improvements you would like to see in the Victoria Road shopping area.

Thirty businesses in Ruislip Manor recently took part in a scheme to revamp their shop windows.    The exercise, which used outside contractors, was part of Hillingdon Council's town centre improvement programme.    A window dressing competition with a Mothers’ Day theme was judged on 13 March.

The winning entry was Harlington Hospice charity shop in Victoria Road.  A certificate and £100 prize was presented by Mayor of Hillingdon.   The D Spot café in Victoria Road was highly commended.    Traders apparently reported increased footfall.   The scheme is to be introduced in Northwood Hills in April.

Also starting in April, businesses may be eligible for a grant of up to £4,800 to improve their shop fronts.    This will be funded from money secured by Hillingdon Council from the Mayor of London.

The Fun Day was a great success.  There were lots of entertainments for the children, lots of stalls for the grown-ups and the sun shone throughout the day.

We were stallholders for the first time.  We learned a lot to do differently on future occasions, but even so it was a great success.  Our team enjoyed meeting members, hearing their views and explaining what our Association does on their behalf.  It was great to chat to John Randall MP when he came to the stall and later in the day to meet the Mayor, Councillor Mary O'Connor who is seen below with Executive Member Ivor John and Chairman Joan Davis.

The next big event will be switching on the Christmas lights on 12th November.  Our team is unanimous - we will be there!

Traffic congestion remains a problem in Victoria Road.    What to do about it is contentious.    Should we reduce the width of the pavements and lose current seating?  Or introduce parking restrictions?    Or ban the lorries serving the retail and industrial park further south?    There is no easy answer.  However, the whole shopping area is due for a make-over, so watch this space for developments as they unfold.

New traffic islands appeared in Cornwall Road, Ruislip Manor, in April 2011, close to the Victoria Road roundabout. Crossing Cornwall Road outside the Post Office had always been a hazard, so this was  a most welcome development for pedestrians.

We wonder whether people in motorised buggies share that view?   Please let us know.

Fun Days in Victoria Road:
  • Saturday 2nd July 2011 – we plan to have a stall!
  • Saturday 12th November 2011
Put these dates in your diary.   If you can help to man our stall, please let us know.

These days are usually great fun for children and interesting for everyone – a day to invite young nieces and nephews to enjoy themselves, a chance for grown-ups to find out about local activities and for everyone to chat to local traders.

The usually staid shopping street is transformed with colour and music and everyone enjoying themselves.  Do come along!

To send an email to the chairman about this, click on the envelope at the bottom of the page.
