Road works in Ruislip High Street, major delays likely, starting 10th November 08

A Victorian sewer has collapsed under the road outside John Sanders, also affecting Brickwall Lane.
Unfortunately Thames Water have no alternative but to go ahead with the repair.
They intend to start work on Monday 10/11 for a period of 4/6 weeks.
It appears that the main that has collapsed is approx 10/11 metres deep.
The work will require 2 way Traffic lights to be in continuous use until completion.
The work will take place 7 days a week, 24 hours a day in order to speed up the process.

The Council would have preferred to delay the start of this work until Jan. 2009 to avoid the Christmas and New Year period but this would only have been possible if a reasonable temporary solution could have been found and this proved not to be possible.

General Meeting 8pm Monday 20th October 2008 Winston Churchill Hall

Planning - Ask your questions!

A General Meeting with a talk by the Borough of Hillingdon Head of Planning, Jales Tippell, and her senior DC Manager, Beverley Kuchar, on the process of making a planning application, through consultation and grounds for objection, to approval or rejection, with comments on the appeals procedure.

This will be followed by “Question Time”.  The panel will include the speakers, Cllr. Keith Burrows, Cabinet Member for Planning and Transportation, Cllr. Bruce Baker, East Ruislip and Chair of the Hillingdon North Planning Committee, and Cllr. Philip Corthorne, West Ruislip and Cabinet Member.   Nick Hurd, MP, has also been invited.

This is your chance to ask questions on planning matters, e.g. what is happening in the Ruislip area, details of local and national planning policies, objection criteria, petitions, conservation areas, etc.

The meeting will conclude with further discussion over refreshments and end about 10pm.

Result of Bessingby Park Residents Survey, July 2008

Over 400 questionnaires were distributed to park users and neighbouring residents. 187 responses were received and those that had indicated a desire to discuss the issues further were invited to a meeting in September where they were joined by council officers and the councillors and Safer Neighbourhoods teams of Manor and Cavendish wards.

At this meeting, the overwhelming request from residents was for installation of fencing to secure the site’s boundaries, and for this to be the number one priority for the site. As a direct consequence, a successful bid was made to the council’s Chrysalis fund, for fencing around the Beverley Road end of the park and work is expected to start later this year.

Also resulting from this meeting was the establishment of the Bessingby Park Management Advisory Group (MAG). The MAG is run by local people, to work with the council’s Green Spaces team to advise on and influence any future improvements to the park.

Swallows Gym - May 2008
The future existence of Swallows Gym in South Ruislip is threatened by the council attempting to reclaim a large amount of back dated rent and Council Tax. The Association's view is that it is a very valuable facility, the existing dynamic works well and that we do not want it threatened. However the council should insist that it is properly managed. We have written to the council requesting that they resolve this dispute quickly and ensure that this wonderful facility continues to be run by the existing management at the existing venue.

Churchfield Gardens Judged for Green Flag Award - May 2008
Churchfield Gardens was judged for a Green Flag Award on 13th May, the Friends of Churchfield Gardens were there as community involvement is vital to the application; this Association was also represented. The results of all the awards will be announced on 17th July.
Prior to the judging the council did a huge amount of work in the gardens, including the complete replanting of the rose garden having first refreshed the soil which had become rosebound. They also replanted the flower bed beside the children's playground and installed a new hut for the park keeper.

Hill Lane – March 2008
The childrens’ play area is now complete.
There was a “clear up and planting day” at the Hill Lane Park on 6th April.

There have been significant changes. A fence and new gate arrangement have been erected, playground equipment replaced together with relevant hard-standing, paths have been installed and a small rain shelter erected.

These improvements were achieved by a number of residents local to the park who formed a group in December 2007,
called the Hill Lane Hurricanes, to halt the deterioration and to improve the facilities. They have been supported by Cllr. Corthorne and the Safer Neighbourhood Team. Some minor changes were funded from the small Street Champions budget but the rest were  paid for from the Chrysalis fund.

The Newly Re-furbished Manor Farm Library is Now Open

The library re-opened on Saturday 15th March with a fun day including a coffee morning, children's crafts and competitions as well as a prize draw. More than one thousand people came through the doors that day.

The library now also benefits from longer opening hours which are :

Monday-Thursday: 9-8
Friday: 9-5.30
Saturday: 9-5

Changes were made to the building for two reasons :

  1. To provide disabled access – under Heritage Lottery project
  2. As part of the general re-fit of libraries across the borough due to the library review

Accessibility Changes
The entrance door has been moved to be half way down the side of the building, in its original position. There are automatic doors and a new counter just inside the door. There is now a wheel chair lift to the old entrance area, which has being refitted with new shelving specially designed to be in keeping with the existing shelving. There are toilets just inside the new entrance. The walls have been re-painted white and a modern version of the existing lighting installed. There is a new lift at the other end of the building which accesses all 3 levels. ie. children’s, main level and upstairs. The building has also being fully dusted as the beams were very dirty.

General Library Refit
The only areas that could be re-fitted were the extension, ie. The children’s library and the upstairs floor above it. The rest of the building is protected by listed building status. The children’s library has been completely gutted. The cost of refurbishing this extension was approximately £20,000. The extension has been completely re-decorated, re-carpeted and new furniture and shelving purchased. There are no plans for a coffee shop in the annex. The Cow Byre cafe will remain. This information was provided by Alec Kennedy who was interim head of Cultural Services at LBH.

What do you think ?
If you've not already had the chance please come along and see what you think and let us know whether you like the changes. There are forms in the library or you can talk to the new manager Darren Deeks and do email us and give us your opinion.

What are the council's plans for libraries across the whole Borough ?

What do you think of the new Ruislip Manor Library ?

Ruislip Manor Library has now transferred from its old building to the new building  in Linden Avenue on the site of the old Victoria Hall. The building doesn't just house the library, there is a new Adult Education facility in the basement and eight flats above. The new library is light and bright with a large area in the middle where you can buy Starbucks coffee. There are new longer opening hours : Mon to Thurs 8.30am – 10pm, Fri 8.30 – 5.30, Sat 9-5, Sun closed.

This is certainly a new look library, some people have commented that it doesn't look like a library. But is this a good thing or a bad thing ?

Manor Farm Duck Pond, December 2006
Three weeks of work have already been done clearing the area around the pond. The area has been rotavated and replanted. 800 plants have been planted. Some corners have been cut, due to the increase in cost from  £30,000 to £46,000. Three benches are to be installed. Two have been paid for already. This Association has decided to pay for the third. The cost for the seat including installation and a plate with inscription would be £1,000.

The pond refurbishment is being carried out by Land Use Consultants, they are doing the re-landscaping of the rest of the site under the Heritage Lottery funds. The Duck Pond is being funded separately by the Chrysalis Fund as bid for by Elma Hutton on behalf of this Association. After this work has been completed the duck pond will then, for the first time, be included in the maintenance contract for the whole site.

The work must be completed before April 2007.

Manor Farm Refurbishment under Lottery Grant, November 2006
The Heritage Lottery Fund tenders are back and go to the council in January, for work to start in February 2007.

Manor Farm ‘Pram Shed’, November 2006
This is the name given to the building next to the farm house. Elma Hutton has applied on behalf of this Association for £15,000 from the Chrysalis fund. This upgrade would include a new door, roof and the addition of electricity to allow a display of farming implements.

New Grounds Maintenance Contract, December 2006
The new Grounds Maintenance contract for the Ruislip Northword area has been awarded as follows:-

Weed Control - Connaught
(They have been awarded the contract to cover the whole of LBH)

Ground Maintenance (Grass Cutting, pitches, parks etc.) - Enterprise                  (They already cover the Hayes contract)

The contract will commence in April 2007 and run for 7 years.

Use of Refurbished Kings College Pavilion, December 2006
The building has been completely refurbished and is available for booking. However the toilets and changing rooms do not appear to be open on weekends and the footballers are continuing to change on the pavement.

The ground floor has male and female changing rooms, a Hall (101 sq m) and four community rooms. The first floor consists of three flats for key workers. The flats have not been let due to issues with how to arrange the tenancies.

The Council is working with the Housing Association and actively pursuing tenants for the flats.  The Pavilion has regular bookings on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night and bookings are building up.
