Churchfield Gardens Update, March 2010

Judging for the 2010 Green Flag Award will take place soon and hopefully Churchfield Gardens will be awarded this prestigious Award for the third year running.

Friends of Churchfield Gardens continue to work closely alongside the Green Space Officers and Park Officer to maintain the appearance of our lovely local park.  Re-planting is taking place with the addition of colourful shrubs around the perimeter; new shrubs in front of the play area; and the Rose Garden borders have been cut back and old shrubs removed.  As you wander through the park, you will see that this hard work has improved the park immensely.

The Friends and neighbours got together in the autumn and spent an afternoon planting  many more spring bulbs and it was great to have so much help from local children.  In the next few weeks, there should be a beautiful show of spring flowers.  Once the weather is warmer, the tennis courts will be cleaned ready for the summer months as they are ever-popular with families at weekends and holidays.

Once again, thanks to everyone who takes an interest in the park, especially to the Green Space Officers and our Park Keeper who continue to do a great job.

If anyone is interested in coming along to any of our Friends meetings, please contact Christine Jamison c/o feedback@ruislipresidents.org.uk.

Update March 2009

As you are aware, Churchfield Gardens was awarded a prestigious Green Flag last year.  This award recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country and reflects the commitment of the local council and community to achieve this standard.

An application has been made for the Green Flag Award 2009 and, hopefully, we will once again be successful.  A lot of work has been going on all through the past year to maintain and improve the standard of Churchfield Gardens.  Anyone passing through will appreciate this, especially with the spring flowers on show!  Decaying old trees have been cleared, new welcoming signs added, extensive re-planting in all areas and new benches sited in the Rose Garden.

Friends of Churchfield Gardens now have a Community Notice Board on the Park Keeper’s Hut to keep the local community up to date.  We are planning a Picnic in the Park during the warmer months and will display details when available, along with any other points of interest.

The installation of a special feature to form a focal point of the gardens has been discussed.  A wood carving/chain-saw carving, possibly under the chestnut grove, is being considered.  Friends of Churchfield Gardens would welcome any thoughts the community may have on this idea.

Thank you to everyone for taking an interest in the park – especially to the Green Space Officers.  Let’s hope we achieve the Green Flag Award again this year!

We look forward to seeing you in the Park!

Churchfield Gardens Gets Green Flag Award - July 2008

Churchfield Gardens is now the proud owner of it's very own Green Flag Award... thanks in no small part to the Friends of.

A big congratulations to all involved.

But, now we are left with one big question...where should the flag pole go?

Churchfield Gardens Judged for Green Flag Award - May 2008
Churchfield Gardens was judged for a Green Flag Award on 13th May, the Friends of Churchfield Gardens were there as community involvement is vital to the application; this Association was also represented. The results of all the awards will be announced on 17th July.
Prior to the judging the council did a huge amount of work in the gardens, including the complete replanting of the rose garden having first refreshed the soil which had become rosebound. They also replanted the flower bed beside the children's playground and installed a new hut for the park keeper.
