Your Voice in Ruislip
What is the Ruislip Residents Association
For 80 years, the Ruislip Residents Association has sought to protect
the interests of local residents. No issue is too big or too small to be
taken up, whether raised by a group or an individual. Sometimes there are
conflicting interests which the Association tries to reconcile. If it
cannot, it presents the issues without bias.
Is it Something to do with the Council ?
The Association is not a political body and has no political
affiliations. But over the years it has established, and will continue to
maintain, strong links with our local elected Councillors of whatever
party.
The Association also has valuable contacts with the Council Officers
dealing with planning and traffic, the Police and local transport services,
and is represented on the Mount Vernon/Watford General Hospitals Community
'Voice' and the Ruislip Woods Trust. It also has links with nearby Residents
Associations, e.g. as a founder member of the local Central Railway Action
Group.
How Does it Function ?
The Association holds at least two General Meetings a year and monthly
committee meetings attended by a Councillor at which major issues are
reported and discussed. It also publishes its newsletter,
'The Town Crier',
three times a year. This is distributed through a network of Area and Road
Stewards who also collect subscriptions and act as a link between individual
members and the elected Committee.
Who Runs the Organisation ?
The Association is served by a Committee. Each member is responsible for
a specific matter of interest, for example, planning, police, health,
transport, conservation and woodlands. Details of all planning applications
are sent to the Committee members responsible, who examine any which appear
to conflict with residents' interests. When the Association feels unable to
support particular objections, it advises those concerned how best to
register their view with the Council.
Who Are the Members ?
The Association represents about 7,000 households of which 3,000 are
currently members. There is a separate residents association in South
Ruislip and we are careful not to infringe upon that area.
Why have a Residents Association ?
A Council is of necessity elected on a fairly limited number of broad
issues. In the course of its term in office matters will arise on which
there has been no clear statement of public opinion. The Residents
Association sets out to provide a continuous liaison between the Council and
the Residents.
How Can I Help ?
As well as becoming a member, you can be a Road Steward, or an Area
Steward. The committee is also constantly on the look out for new members to
broaden our view point, for more details see
How to Help.
Why do we need Subscriptions ?
For the Association to function there are modest costs such as postage,
printing of the 'Town Crier', hire of meeting halls and certain secretarial
expenses. The membership subscription is £1.50 per year (optionally 50p for
Senior Citizens).
